LEIDEN COMPUTER CHESS COMPETITION

THE IMPACT OF OPENING BOOK

Even comps play tournaments!

So! There was another engine tournament – this time in Leiden May 6-9 2006. Actually as a chessplayer I was surprised to discover that computers have quite a lot of their own tournaments and that they make special preparation before it just like… “humans”. Forgive me, but I used to think that engines are only made to be used by chessplayers J.

What about having personal opening trainer !?

Rybka won Leiden competition and it is cool J! Of course I am happy - I am the biggest Rybka fun for personal reasons J, but…  it is very nice win also because the score was 8,5 from 9 and that had helped Rybka author Vas Rajlich to realize how important a good opening book maybe! Btw, You know that Rybka 1.1 if you let her play by herself in the very beginning likes to play: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3. N:e5 Nc6?! (ply 13) don’t you J?

WHITE TO PLAY

There is no compensation for that pawn (no kidding J) and white is much better after simple:

 4. N:c6

Only 9 games L to prove you deserve your 3000 elo !

According to computers rating lists, based on thousands of games, Rybka was much better than others participants. Fact, but Leiden tournament is only 9 rounds and the last think you would like to get when your engine plays is a drawish position or “disasters” after opening. Come think of it everything could have happened if there would not be a decent book by Rybka opening “coach” Jeroen Noomen.
